New palladium-103 brachytherapy seed deal for US and Canada 13th January 2010
Prostate cancer sufferers in the US and Canada received a boost yesterday (12th January) after a new partnership involving palladium-103 brachytherapy seeds was announced.
Medical device firm Theragenics Corporation confirmed that it has signed an exclusive deal with Core Oncology for the distribution of its TheraSeed device in both countries.
The supply and resell agreement is set to run until 30th November 2011 and will be automatically extended for an additional year unless either party decides to terminate it.
"TheraSeed provides us with the industry's leading palladium seed to complement our industry-leading iodine-125 product, ProstaSeed," said Travis Gay, CEO and President of Core Oncology.
"Theragenics is a recognised leader in brachytherapy and our new partnership should further Core's goal of providing high quality and innovative products to our customers."
The palladium-103 and iodine-125 surgical products are predominantly used in the minimally invasive treatment of localised prostate cancer.
Scientists confirmed this week that they have discovered the first gene linked to the aggressive form of prostrate cancer, which could help to predict how the disease will develop.
