Platinum casing features on unique new high-end watch 27th January 2010
A unique new limited edition watch housed in a platinum case has been launched by leading manufacturer Omega.
The Skeletonised Central Tourbillon Co-Axial Platinum features a central mechanism that rotates completely every 60 seconds, thus offsetting the effect of gravity on its performance.
Only 18 of the timepieces have been created, with each one handcrafted by a different horologist at the company's Cellule Haut de Gamme in Bienne, Switzerland.
According to Omega, the watch is an "exquisite creation" which is set apart from rival designs by its accuracy and complex structure, with its movement containing 320 parts.
"Unlike products from conventional workshops, each Tourbillon is the work of one watchmaker who spends up to 540 hours on the creation of the skeletonised version," the firm noted.
"The outstanding chronometric performance of the Co-Axial calibre 2636 is enhanced by the state-of-the-industry escapement which has re-defined the way mechanical wristwatches are being made."
In addition to the platinum casing, the watch features a black alligator bracelet, while the movement contains a pearlescent finish and the rotor incorporates a sapphire plate.
Omega watches are perhaps best known for their role in recent James Bond films or NASA's choice to use them during the first-ever successful moon landing in 1969.
